Thrash Metal Reviews

Except for maybe power metal, there probably aren’t any genres I listened to more in my life than thrash metal. The high tempos, intricate riffing and overall intensity of the genre greatly appeal to me. As a result, thrash metal releases have been covered in my Album of the Week reviews frequently. Thrash metal reviews published on Kevy Metal can be found on this page. Minor overlaps with my heavy metal reviews or even my power metal reviews might exist, since I do particularly like the more melodic side of the thrash metal spectrum.

Since I did not start properly tagging my reviews until a couple of years in, some reviews that will not show up below might still exist on the site. Searching for reviews by artist or release title can be done conveniently by using the search bar at the bottom of the page.

  • Best of 2022: The Albums

Let’s start the introduction to the list of my favorite albums of the year by stating the obvious: 2022 was the greatest year for new music in a long time. It took a while before the music industry got there. For a while during the first half of the year,…

  • Album of the Week 51-2022: Agent Steel – Omega Conspiracy

When ‘Omega Conspiracy’ was released, it was not just a comeback after well over a decade of inactivity, it was a reinvention of what Agent Steel could sound like. Not that the album was a complete departure from what the band did before, but Agent Steel presents itself as a…

  • Album of the Week 49-2022: Anthrax – For All Kings

In my earlier review of ‘Spreading The Disease’, I argued that I am not sure whether Anthrax deserves to be considered part of the so-called “Big Four” of thrash metal. That has nothing to do with Testament selling more albums outside North America, Exodus being more influential or OverKill’s seniority.…

  • Album of the Week 45-2022: Xentrix – Seven Words

Not many thrash metal bands from the eighties can claim they release their best work in the twenty-first century. Plenty of them released “best since” albums, which often lack what made the bands in question special in their heyday. Xentrix appears to be one of the exceptions to that rule.…

  • Album of the Week 42-2022: Vorbid – A Swan By The Edge Of Mandala

What a surprising evolution… Prior to ‘A Swan By The Edge Of Mandala’, Vorbid made a combination of thrash metal riffs and distinct progressive compositions that made me see them as part of the same scene as all those proggy thrash bands whose name start with a V. You know…

  • Album of the Week 36-2022: Pentagram – Makina Elektrika

‘Makina Elektrika’ is the first album of new material by Turkish heavy metal giants Pentagram in a decade. But the band hasn’t been sitting still in the intervening years. Most notably, they have reunited with former singers Murat İlkan and Ogün Sanlısoy, as well as guitarist Demir Demirkan, to form…

  • Album of the Week 34-2022: Megadeth – The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!

Dave Mustaine is the only musician from thrash metal’s heyday who can occasionally still write material that is just as good as his classic work. And given the strength of the first two singles of ‘The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!’, Megadeth’s new album instantly became my most anticipated…

  • Album of the Week 30-2022: Arakain – Schizofrenie

Someone thankfully came to their senses and reissued Arakain’s sophomore album ‘Schizofrenie’ last month. The cd version of the album went for ridiculous prices at online marketplaces, but it is worth seeking out, as it is the best pure thrash metal album Arakain ever released – possibly their only, depending…

  • Album of the Week 29-2022: Megadeth – Rust In Peace

With a very promising new Megadeth album on the horizon, I thought it would be interesting to have a look at the yardstick by which I tend to measure every other Megadeth album. At the time, ‘Rust In Peace’ was the album that finally delivered on the promise Dave Mustaine…
