Thrash Metal Reviews

Except for maybe power metal, there probably aren’t any genres I listened to more in my life than thrash metal. The high tempos, intricate riffing and overall intensity of the genre greatly appeal to me. As a result, thrash metal releases have been covered in my Album of the Week reviews frequently. Thrash metal reviews published on Kevy Metal can be found on this page. Minor overlaps with my heavy metal reviews or even my power metal reviews might exist, since I do particularly like the more melodic side of the thrash metal spectrum.

Since I did not start properly tagging my reviews until a couple of years in, some reviews that will not show up below might still exist on the site. Searching for reviews by artist or release title can be done conveniently by using the search bar at the bottom of the page.

  • Album of the Week 20-2024: Kerry King – From Hell I Rise

‘From Hell I Rise’ is a fairly unique solo debut situation for an established metal guitarist in that it is basically an extension of Kerry King’s old band, rather than a vehicle for something he couldn’t express with his main band. Now that Slayer isn’t recording anymore, everybody expected King’s…

  • Album of the Week 16-2024: Miserable – Al Abismo de la Libertad

Miserable has got to be one of the most productive metal bands in Peru. ‘Al Abismo de la Libertad’ is their third album of original material in six years, and like its predecessors, it is a breath of fresh air within the thrash metal landscape. They can riff viciously whenever…

  • Album of the Week 07-2024: Morbid Saint – Swallowed by Hell

Full disclosure: I did not expect Morbid Saint’s first proper post-reunion album ‘Swallowed by Hell’ to be anywhere near as good as it is. Thrashers their age often end up sounding tired or neutered by modern production techniques, and given the fact that Morbid Saint is known primarily for its…

  • Album of the Week 05-2024: Jenner – Prove Them Wrong

Jenner’s debut album ‘To Live is to Suffer’ impressed me with its surprisingly mature approach to thrash metal songwriting. Guitarist and main songwriter Aleksandra Stamenković is one of the few young thrashers that realizes a good thrash song needs more than just a bunch of fast riffs and a handful…

  • Album of the Week 02-2024: Miserable – Gran Náusea

When ‘Gran Náusea’ was recorded, Miserable was still pretty much the solo project of Adrián Del Aguila, fresh off releasing his first album with M.A.S.A.C.R.E after a decade fronting that band. But two things are clear immediately: one is that this material couldn’t really have worked within what M.A.S.A.C.R.E was…

  • Best of 2023: The Albums

As announced, my list of the best albums released in 2023 is a day early in order to fully devote January to Peruvian Metal Month, but that should not have any effect on the actual list. Once again, it wasn’t too difficult to fill the list with twenty titles. After…

  • Announcement: Peruvian Metal Month

Exciting news! January will be Peruvian Metal Month on Kevy Metal. What does that mean? For starters, every interview that will be published here throughout the month will be with a metal musician from Peru, and each of the four Album of the Week reviews will be about releases by…

  • Album of the Week 51-2023: Malón – Oscuro Plan del Poder

Although I have always preferred Malón to Hermética – the wildly popular Argentine metal band it spun off from – due to their lack of upbeat, punky tracks and overly long ballads, it has been a while since they actually released an album I enjoyed. That sounds worse than it…

  • Album of the Week 39-2023: Miserable – Esclavo Miserable

Even the best newer thrash metal bands tend to sound so much like the classic bands from the eighties that they ultimately end up feeling like watered-down versions of those bands. Part of the problem might be that the parameters of what constitutes thrash metal are quite narrow. However, Peru’s…
